The Mareeba-Dimbulah Tobacco Exhibition and Archive

The Mareeba-Dimbulah Tobacco Exhibition and Archive began as a broadcast radio documentary and series produced by Suzanne Gibson for ABC Radio.

Realising the industry was about to be closed down in Far North Queensland, Suzanne teamed up with photographer Kerry Trapnell to document in words and pictures the last seasons of tobacco growing in North Queensland.

The aim was to ensure that this unique industry, its practises and its important social history stories were recorded and preserved for future generations of local, state and national researchers.  The project was supported by the local growers Co-op and the end product was an photographic, audio/visual exhibition at the Mareeba Heritage Centre and a digital archive for the Mareeba-Dimbulah library.  The original oral history recordings and images have been archived in the State Library of Queensland.
